Domain Name Scam
Apr 15, 2010
Let's talk domain names...
Whether you register your own domain name or we register it for you, you need to know who you are paying yearly.
First, the domain name should be registered in your name, not in another companies name. It is ok if the company who registered it for you listed themsleves as the technical and billing contact, but your personal or company name should be the one it is registered to.
Second, do not ever pay another company to register your domain name unless you know exactly who they are.
SCAMMERS
What we have seen a lot of over the past year is a company will send an official looking letter to the registrant of a domain name stating that the domain name is about to expire, scaring the registrant into thinking they are about to lose their domain name. Of course, the company is more than happy to register it and keep if from expiring. SCAM! Filling out their paperwork and paying for them to do this not only gives them your domain name, but they also just made money off of you!
One of the largest companies that run this scam is "Domain Names Of America." Even we have received letters from them warning us that our domain names are about to expire. This company will charge you $50.00 to register your domain name, and it can be a real fight for you to get your money or your domain name back.
If Eagle Web Designs registers your domain name for you, all you have to remember is that you don't pay a 3rd party; you only pay us.
To do our part, we have reported the "Domain Names Of America" to the BBB. You should too, if you receive one of these letters.
Don't be fooled. When in doubt, ask us!
